My name is Bettina and I'm the owner of Bard's. I took over the business in 2018 from my Uncle Karl. He had been running the business since my grandfather, Ewald 'Rudy' Rudat, retired many years ago. Our family has been specializing in custom furniture making and upholstery work for nine generations! It’s literally in our blood. My grandfather brought our family, and the family business, from Germany to La Jolla in 1958. We’ve always specialized in upholstery and custom-made furniture. Over the years, we’ve expanded our line of work, and today, our creations are endless. We offer decorating services, custom window treatments, wall coverings, pillows, cushions, completely custom furniture, antique restoration, and more…
I am honored to have the opportunity to keep my family’s business alive. My grandfather took pride in our work and our family legacy, and would be proud if he could see the store thriving now. Unfortunately, he passed away in 2016. To be able to carry on the family legacy is beyond fulfilling.
We are committed to the intricate craftsmanship we put into our upholstery and handmade pieces. Unlike factories, we still do everything by hand the old school way. Beautiful furniture inspires us and we get beyond excited to be able to breathe new life into furniture, antiques, decor and the rooms in which they live.
Many of the craftsmen and women who work at Bard’s have been here since the days my grandfather ran the shop. Newer employees are hand picked for their passion and skill. For us, this is not just a job; this is our livelihood.
Every piece that leaves Bard’s has a story, and we are part of that story.
